Earth Day / Zero Waste Day

Zero Waste Day at NSM means we will take steps to minimize the amount of material headed for the landfill. The main sources of waste are from hand drying with paper towels, snacks, and lunch.

We encourage students to bring hand towels that can stay in work bins or hooks to dry hands with throughout the day, and to send in only reusable materials and containers for snack and lunch.

We will also minimize the disposal of school materials and send what we can to the composting bin.

We will measure the success of this project by weighing the amount of waste that accumulates on a normal day and compare it to the weight of waste that is generated on Earth Day.

Open Montessori

E-Commerce Workshop by Open Montessori & New School Montessori

The Open Montessori E-Commerce Workshop is a 5-day primer course designed to demystify the world of online retail sales and marketing. New School students from the 7th and 8th grade classroom will be invited to build a fully-functional digital storefront, market a selection of custom products, and fulfill orders placed online.

During the workshop, students will work directly with several technologies that underpin today’s retail ecosystem including Shopify, Meta Ads, and Google Analytics. Together with new AI tools, the class will develop imagery and text descriptions optimized for SEO. After looking ‘under the hood’ at how content is generated, propagated and monetized online, students will be asked to reflect on some of the opportunities and risks of today’s high-paced consumer landscape.

**All proceeds from the New School Store will be directed toward student field trips.**

IU13 Community Conversation on School Safety

February 29, 2024 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Schools and districts will gather to discuss data pertaining to school safety. Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are eager to gain more insights into the specific school safety information that holds the greatest significance for members of your school community. Your input is important in helping us understand how we can enhance the overall sense of safety in your districts and schools. We invite you to participate in a Community Conversation on School Safety, where you will have the opportunity to share your ideas through small group discussions. Your perspective is crucial in fostering a safer and more secure school environment for everyone.

We want to hear from  you:

  • What information about school safety is important for you to know?
  • How can PDE use this information to inform state-level practices pertaining to school safety, emotionally support school environments, and enhance student and staff wellness?

We welcome all community members with ties to school and school-aged children who want to share their school safety priorities, including:

  • Parents or guardians, families, students
  • Educators, teachers, school staff, administrators, district leaders, and IU staff
  • Law enforcement and school safety staff
